Maria is a British journalist, born and raised in London to Spanish parents. Her international outlook was shaped early on, beginning her professional life as an English teacher before transitioning into journalism.

Her journalism career began with the Miami Herald in Central America, followed by reporting roles with Le Monde in Francophone Africa and Time Magazine in Italy.
